Essays
Longer-form thinking on tribalism, cooperation and the challenge of living together on one planet.
Some questions need more space.
Beyond Tribes essays will explore ideas that emerge from the project’s research and conversations, drawing connections across disciplines and following questions that do not fit neatly within a single interview.
The aim is not to produce commentary on every political controversy or news cycle. It is to step back from the immediate argument and examine the deeper forces underneath it: cooperation, identity, status, institutions, incentives, conflict and the boundaries we draw between groups.
Essays in development
The first Beyond Tribes essays are currently being developed alongside the project’s conversations and research.
They will use the questions behind Beyond Tribes as starting points, bringing together evidence, competing explanations and ideas from different fields.
Some will try to understand a problem.
Others will ask whether familiar assumptions actually hold up.
And some will focus on possible solutions.
The first essays will appear here as the project develops.
